Hundreds of dead fish wash up into upcoming Olympic venue in Brazil

Friday, February 27, 2015, 12:55 PM - The organizers behind the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are unlikely to get a 'gold medal' from environmentalists.

Just a day after Rio's governor announced a plan to reduce the pollution in the Guanabara Bay, images showing hundreds of dead fish began to appear on social media.

The problem extends even beyond that location, according to biologist Mario Moscatelli.

Dead fish have also been spotted in Duque de Caxias, Magé and Ilha de Paquetá. Some biologists say that the pollution might not be the cause of deaths but rather a drought that has been affecting parts of the region. Local biologists told Globo that the lack of precipitation could be affecting the salinity or other chemical parameters of the water.

About 12 tons of dead fish had to be removed from the area.

NOT JUST A PROBLEM WITH THE SEA

A group of demonstrators have begun protesting the Olympics—specifically golf.

Golf will be part of the Olympic Games in Rio after 112 years away. Gold was only part of the official program in 1900 and 1904.

But now people are angry that the new golf course is being built on an area of environmental protection. The mayor of Rio obtained approval to build the site in the reserve in an emergency session of city council back in 2012.

Local experts said the decision was made without any technical studies or public meetings.
