A rare photograph showing Titanic victims being buried at sea is to be auctioned in Wiltshire later this month.

It was taken just nine days after the Titanic hit an iceberg on April 15, 1912.

Records show that 166 out of 306 bodies collected by the Mackay-Bennett were buried at sea, but no image has been seen publicly until now.

Devizes-based auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said the photo gave a "unique insight" into the burials and interest for it has come in from all over the world.

"It depicts, really, the horrors and the gruesome tasks these men had to go through,” Aldridge told the Halifax Chronicle Herald. “Titanic, she was the ship of dreams, but this was the actual reality of massive loss of life at sea."

Alridge adds the photographer remains unknown.

The photo is expected to sell for over $8,000 Canadian.
