Hold the syrup: Rare 'ice pancakes' the size of plates form on Scotland's River Dee

Sunday, December 21, 2014, 5:07 PM - A recent discovery on Scotland's River Dee has drawn internet attention around the world.

Unusual ice formations resembling pancakes the size of plates were recently found floating on Scotland's River Dee.

The unique phenomenon was by discovered by members of The River Dee Trust at a place called the Lummels Pool, at Birse, in Aberdeenshire.

River Dee Team biologist Jamie Urquhart said it was thought foam floating about on the water started to freeze and bump together, forming the discs.

"What we think happened is this," he said on a blog post."Foam floating about on the water started to freeze, probably at night. Bits of frozen foam got swirled around in an eddy, and became roughly circular. Perhaps each disc grew when smaller pieces of unfrozen foam struck the disc, adhered and then froze in place."

Urquhart found the ice pancakes at Lummels Pool at Birse, about 48 kilometres from Aberdeen.

Normally pancakes form on ocean water or lakes around the Arctic circle where the movement of water keeps the ice from forming a flat sheet.

Urquhart said it is the first time that he and his team at the Dee River Trust have seen pancake ice form on the river.
