Hero dog saves couple from drowning in California

Tuesday, March 31, 2015, 5:10 PM - Nico, a newly-adopted Bernese mountain dog, is being hailed as a hero after a rescuing a couple from drowning in a California riptide earlier this month.

Nico was spending the day with his family in Ventura, California about a week-and-a-half ago when he noticed a lady struggling in the water.

The woman's husband swam out to save her but ended up getting swept away as well.

Nico -- who had no known previous ocean experience -- swam out to the woman, who grabbed onto him as he pulled her to shore.

He then ran back into the water to retrieve the husband.

The couple couldn't believe Nico isn't a trained rescue dog.

“That’s the first time I’ve seen him doing something like that,” his owner told KTLA.

Nico, who is 3-years-old, was adopted from an animal shelter two months ago.
