Rain has been falling across Newfoundland since Monday with some places seeing between 30-60 mm.

Now, more significant rainfall is expected, prompting rainfall warnings for places like Gander and Bonavista.

"A broad area of low pressure south of Newfoundland will remain nearly stationary until eventually moving away to the east on Friday," Environment Canada warns.

This will result in a persistent moist northeasterly flow across a good portion of the island, especially along the east and northeast coasts.

The heavier rain is expected Thursday night with total rainfall amounts of up to 80 mm possible in the hardest hit areas.

Lesser amounts of up to 30 mm are forecast for St. John's and the northern Avalon.
