Severe thunderstorm warnings were widespread across Newfoundland Friday.
A series of disturbances within a warm, tropical airmass lying across the island will continue to bring very unsettled conditions to many areas of the province Friday evening.
"Under this type of airmass it is not uncommon to receive brief and sudden heavy downpours producing high rainfall rates, possibly as much as 25 mm in one hours," said Environment Canada (EC) in a weather statement Friday afternoon."
Additionally, localized rainfall amounts could reach 50 mm Friday night or exceed 50 mm when combined with what fell earlier in the day.
These conditions can result in local washouts and dangerous driving conditions due to heavy water build-up on the roads, EC warns.

Meanwhile, a fog advisory has also been issued for the Avalon Peninsula.
"A southwesterly flow of humid air has become established over southern Newfoundland resulting in a prolonged period of dense fog giving poor visibility," said EC in a weather advisory. "Fog will be most persistent where winds blow onshore."
Drivers are advised to use extra caution if travelling Friday evening.
Conditions are expected to improve on Saturday as drier air pushes into the region.
