Nearly 2,000 dead as rain and clouds relieve India heat

Saturday, May 30, 2015, 8:46 AM - Officials say almost 2,000 people have died since mid-April in a heat wave that has hit southeast Indian states.
Officials told the Associated Press Tuesday that the southeastern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana have been the hardest hit.
At least 1,118 people have died since last week according to the BBC.

Daytime highs have been soaring near the 50C mark, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors and putting hospitals on high alert for heat exhaustion patients.
The soaring temperatures have caused roadways to melt.
May and June are typically India's warmest months of the year.
Temperatures finally began to cool on Friday, as showers and cloudy skies helped to ease the unbearable heat.
The end of the month signals the beginning of the summer monsoon season, when more rain is expected to bring relief to parched areas.
