Earth Week: Global warming pushes venomous snakes north

PRESENTED BY

Wednesday, April 20, 2016, 7:14 AM - The coming decades may be a little more fraught for people who don't like sharing Canada's woods with snakes.

A recent study extrapolated the maximum northern range of North American snakes if global warming continues, and found that by 2050, more snakes are likely to make British Columbia and southern Ontario their home.

It's an intuitive shift for these species (in western Canada, you may be likelier to see rattlesnakes), looking to keep pace with their climate sweet spot as average temperatures rise and rain patterns shift.

Though the snakes will certainly be high profile newcomers, they're just one group that's likelier to track northward. Researchers say insects such as mosquitoes and ticks will also decide to migrate with the changing climate.
