Frost threat persists; Warm weather returns for the weekend

Dr. Doug Gillham
Meteorologist, PhD

Friday, September 19, 2014, 10:10 AM - Parts of southern Ontario, including the outskirts of the GTA, will see their first frost of the season early Friday morning, but above seasonal temperatures will quickly return for the last official weekend of the summer.

Daytime temperatures on Thursday and Friday will be more typical of mid-October across Southern Ontario and with clear skies Thursday night, temperatures will approach the freezing point away from the Great Lakes.

It is important to keep in mind that frost often forms during nights in which the official observed temperature remains a couple degrees above 0 ºC. Official temperature measurements are taken about 2 metres above the ground, but on a clear and calm night it can be several degrees colder along the ground, allowing frost to form on plants.

So, be sure to protect your plants tonight even if your low temperature forecast is a few degrees above 0 ºC. Surfaces such as car windshields can also be several degrees colder and become frosty on a night when the air remains above freezing.

Friday will bring abundant sunshine, but temperatures will remain well below seasonal. However, Friday night will be as cold as the wind turns to the southwest and clouds increase ahead of much milder weather for the weekend.

Saturday will bring a mixture of clouds & some sun for the GTA with a strong and gusty southwest wind. A passing shower is possible during the day, but the widespread rain should hold off until Saturday evening or overnight. However, the threat for rain will arrive earlier in the day well to the north of the GTA, including parts of cottage country.

High temperatures on Saturday will approach the mid-20s with a humidex in the upper 20s.

Sunday will be breezy and warm with showers ending during the morning. A cold front will cross Southern Ontario late Sunday afternoon and evening, but we should see several hours of pleasant weather during the afternoon.

October-like temperatures will return for early next week, but we should see a lot of sunshine to go along with the cool temperatures.

Meanwhile, a frost advisory remains in effect for parts of Quebec and New Brunswick.
