From late-summer to late-autumn in southern Ontario

Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 4:16 PM - Late summer-like temperatures will make a brief return to Southern Ontario on Thursday and Friday, but much colder weather is on the way for the weekend though the middle of next week with high temperatures more typical of late October.

Thursday will be a pleasant day across southern Ontario with a mixture of sun and clouds and high temperatures in the lower twenties. Friday morning will be pleasant with a mixture of clouds and sun with temperatures rising into the low to mid-twenties (cooler near the north shore of Lake Ontario).

However, during the afternoon widespread rain with scattered thunderstorms will spread across the region, reaching the GTA during the mid-to-late afternoon. The soaking rain and wind gusts of 60—80 km/h will impact the late afternoon and evening commute.

Strong and gusty winds will continue through Friday night and into Saturday. During the day on Saturday, scattered showers are likely in the GTA, but much of the day will be rain-free. However, the showers will be more widespread across eastern Ontario, southern Niagara and closer to Georgian Bay and Lake Huron where lake effect showers are likely. Temperatures will be noticeably colder with highs only in the lower teens on both Saturday and Sunday.

The autumnal conditions will continue through the middle of next week with high temperatures several degrees below seasonal.

As we head into the end of next week and into the Thanksgiving long weekend, the focus of the below seasonal temperatures should shift back to the Prairies, allowing milder weather to approach southern Ontario from the south.

However, it does not look like the pattern will change enough for southern Ontario to get into an extended period of warm weather. With it being a transition between above seasonal and below seasonal temperatures in the region, we have the potential for considerable fluctuations in temperatures late next week and during the Thanksgiving weekend.
