Celebrities help those hit hard in Fort McMurray

Wednesday, May 11, 2016, 11:30 AM - The full scale of the damage has yet to be determined, but some experts say the Fort McMurray wildfire could be the costliest natural disaster in Canada's history.

The whole country, and the rest of the world, has stood by watching in horror as these events have unfolded, but people have done more than act as spectators. As the photos and videos of the destruction and loss fill screens, there has been an outpouring of support from countless people across the globe, including many celebrities.
The latest message, as featured in the video above, shows former basketball star Shaquille O'Neal paying his respects to all of the firefighters involved.
Here's a list of some of the other ways people are reaching out to help those impacted by the Fort McMurray fires:
- American singer-songwriter James Taylor plans to donate the proceeds from his June 7 show in Edmonton and June 8 in Calgary to help with relief efforts.
- Comedian and SNL alum Rob Schneider will be hosting three comedy shows to benefit the people of Fort McMurray. He's set to perform two shows on Monday, May 16 as part of the You Can Do It! Fort McMurray Benefit at The Comic Strip in West Edmonton Mall, and another show at the Edmonton Expo Centre Tuesday, May 17. Get more information here.
- NHL team the St. Louis Blues raised more than $25,000 from their 50/50 raffle and silent auction during their recent game against the Dallas Stars. Scottie Upshall, forward for the Blues, was born in Fort McMurray.
- Canadian record label Goodswell Music has announced it will be donating 100 per cent of its online store’s proceeds to the Canadian Red Cross’ Alberta Fires Appeal this week. Visit Goodswell Music here.

- Stanley Barkman of Sioux Lookout, Ontario plans to walk 2,080 kilometres from Sioux Lookou to Fort McMurray, Alta. to raise money.
- A group of schoolchildren from Elmsdale, Nova Scotia raised an impressive $2,600 by holding an ice cream stand.
- Lincoln County Humane Society in St. Catharines Ontario plans to donate $2,000 to its Edmonton agency. Its volunteer dog walkers plan to donate an additional $500.
- Artist Russell Thomas has created a beautiful portrait of Fort McMurray fire chief Darby Allen. The original will be gifted to the fire department. Prints will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting victims.

- Canadian actor Jonathan Torrens and musician Joel Plaskett are donating their Aeroplan points to transport people impacted by the fire.
