Provincial police say a 53-year-old man was killed by a lightning strike near Elgin, southwest of Ottawa, over the weekend.

Joseph Higgins of New Jersey had been fishing with his daughter when a storm rolled through.

According to police, he was pronounced dead shortly after being struck at about 8 pm on Saturday.

Higgins and his daughter were out boating on Clear Lake at the time and they tried to seek shelter underneath a cottage, but he was struck by lightning while on land.
