Tuesday, May 20, 2014, 7:21 PM - A 'selfie' of a California firefighter taking a break while fighting fires in San Diego County has gone viral, racking up more than 35,000 'likes' on Facebook.

San Marcos firefighter Tim Bergon took the photo on Saturday and sent it to his wife to let her know he's OK.

The photo was posted to the Plan 9 Alehouse Facebook page by Monica Calles, who is a friend of the Bergon family. Within hours, it had gone viral.

"We were kind of shocked at how people responded [on Facebook]," she told local media.

"I guess it just really shows you how much that meant to everybody because of what they did."

The photo depicts Bergon, a father of three, taking a break with his colleagues.

"You see how exhausted they are it just makes you really, really grateful for all they do and they always do it," Calles says.

After days of battling intense flames, California firefighters appear to be making ground on a series of fires that have destroyed a number of homes and forced thousands of evacuations.

Three men are now in custody after witnesses reported seeing people set fires in Escondido.

The rash of fires are now close to being contained, thanks to the effort of thousands of firefighters and military personnel.
