Friday, May 22, 2015, 2:23 PM - A selfie -- or an 'elphie' as some people are calling it -- has gone viral, racking up thousands of 'likes' on Instagram.

Christian LeBlanc of Vancouver has become an Internet star after an elephant in Thailand grabbed his GoPro camera.

The 22 year-old UBC student has been living in Bangkok for the past few months on an exchange program.

According to the CBC, he was travelling through southern Thailand earlier this year when he spotted an elephant sanctuary.

LeBlanc and his girlfriend were feeding an elephant bananas when they ran out of fruit.

"The elephant loves the bananas, so it kind of gets a bit nosy — it grabs at your hands, it tries to take all the bananas. And once we ran out, next thing I knew it was it was grabbing the GoPro," Leblanc told the CBC.

He says the elephant took the camera "with one swift movement", capturing the now-famous photo.

This isn't the first time an animal has made an unexpected appearance in a viral photo.

In April, a turtle 'photobomb' captured in the Philippines made international headlines and racked up more than 3 million views on Imgur.
