This incredible video, uploaded to YouTube by Andrew Cause, captures the rescue of a family trapped in their car by rising floodwaters in the town of Hockley.

Cause says around seven people pitched in, wading into the floodwaters to rescue the driver, his son, his niece and his nephew, before the car sank into the waters.

The driver, Scott Swinford, later told media he drove his vehicle, a Mitsubishi Pajero, into the flood waters beneath a railway bridge. When he realized the water was too deep, he tried to reverse, with no success.

Flooding was widespread across parts of southern England on Saturday, with Essex alone seeing some of the highest totals, almost 60 mm in a day.
