Daily weather brief: Cool down in the west, snow potential for the east

Friday, January 30, 2015, 7:20 AM - There's snow potential in the east and the west and a cold weekend ahead for some. Here's what you need to know for Friday.

ATLANTIC CANADA

  • Maritimes: The next storm to hit the region should move in Friday night and into Saturday. Winter storm watches and warnings have been issued for the Atlantic provinces by Environment Canada, with current indications suggesting the system will bring mainly snow to New Brunswick. A mix between snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and rain is expected for Nova Scotia and PEI. The Maritimes will see increasing cloud Friday with flurries beginning in New Brunswick during the afternoon.
  • Newfoundland: The system is forecast to bring between 10 and 15 cm to Newfoundland. Snowfall warnings and freezing rain warnings are in effect.

ONTARIO AND QUEBEC

  • Quebec: A passing clipper could bring up to 20 cm of snow to the eastern townships, including Mont Tremblant.
  • Ontario: Temperatures will be much colder Friday with wind chill values in -20 southern and northern Ontario. Lake effect snow could occur off Lake Huron in the London-Starthroy-Sarnia and could persist into the afternoon. Areas south of Georgian Bay could see some lake effect snow set up as well. "Snowfall totals look to be rather insignificant, yet when combining with the strong winds and the fresh snow that fell, whiteout conditions through the Snowbelt could be a major issue," cautions Erin Wenckstern, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

WESTERN CANADA

  • Prairies: A weak surface low tracking through Saskatchewan and Manitoba could bring Winnipeg a centimeter of snow Friday. "We will see energy from the west coast make its way into Alberta," says Kelly Sonnenburg, another meteorologist at The Weather Network. "Snowfall amounts will be in the 10-15 cm range through Grande Prairie, 5-10 cm for Edmonton and less than 5 cm for Calgary and south. Snow will make its way into Edmonton Friday afternoon and then track south into Calgary through the overnight into Saturday." Manitoba and Saskatchewan have started to cool down. It's part of a trend that will make its way into Alberta this weekend.
  • British Columbia: A low off the coast is feeding moisture into the central-north coast. "Prince Rupert and the surrounding areas could see up to 40 mm of rain," Sonnenburg says. "The avalanche danger rating for the northwest coastal region will remain high into Friday." Seasonal or above seasonal temperatures will persist along the B.C. south coast this weekend, with conditions becoming unsettled Saturday into Sunday.
