Tuesday, December 1, 2015, 11:02 AM - A mild and high pressure filled week continues across the Prairies as the rest of the country deals with a series of storms. Strong winds, heavy rain and snow on tap in British Columbia, while a heightened freezing rain threat and heavy wet snow prompt warnings in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Here's your Monday weather brief.

Atlantic Canada

  • Maritimes: Isolated sea effect flurries are ending today, with fair and milder conditions expected through Wednesday. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for northern New Brunswick warning of freezing rain early Wednesday. Looking further ahead, "a transition to moderate, wet snow is possible for New Brunswick and PEI early Thursday with forecast models ramping up snowfall projections for Thursday," says Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton.
  • Newfoundland: Rain and snow on tap for much of the province starting Wednesday through Friday. A special weather statement is in place warning of "a series of low pressure systems." Precipitation expected to start as rain before changing over to heavy snow Thursday night into Friday.

  • Ontario: Drizzle and light showers on tap for southern Ontario today, easing by this evening. Freezing rain warnings have been issued for eastern Ontario with a couple millimetres of ice accretion possible. The freezing rain should change over to a cold rain for the Ottawa Valley by the mid-afternoon hours.
  • Quebec: Freezing rain warnings also in place for parts of Quebec, with the most ice accretion expected for northwestern regions.

Western Canada

  • Prairies: Much of the Prairies can expect a "mild and high pressure ridge-filled week, with a blip or two," Hamilton says. Strong winds are expected for extreme southwestern Alberta for the next several days with a risk of light snow and freezing rain in northern Alberta and northern Saskatchewan Wednesday. "Trough tries to form in Alberta by the weekend and brings risk of (very) isolated flurries back into the picture, but above seasonal conditions (up to 10C above climate normal) is the trend," says Hamilton.
  • British Columbia: "Storm parade returns!," adds Hamilton. "Epic amounts of powder in store for higher elevations of BC coastal mountain ranges by the end of the week (60+cm)." Strong winds and heavy coastal rains are forecast for north Vancouver Island and the central coast Tuesday. The heaviest rain in Metro Vancouver is expected Tuesday night. There will be a break Wednesday before the next system arrives late in the day for the southern coast, with each system getting progressive heavier rain.
