Severe thunderstorms hit southern Manitoba. Meanwhile, in Atlantic Canada there is a risk of storms for Newfoundland. Here's your Friday weather brief.

Atlantic Canada

  • Maritimes: Showers move out of the Maritimes, with a relatively dry day on tap. Nice weekend ahead for the Maritimes.
  • Newfoundland: Rain continues for the island Friday, with up to 20 mm expected for northern portions. Eastern parts of the province could see up to 10 mm. As the front sweeps through there is also the risk of thunderstorms.

  • Ontario: High pressure dominates Friday in the province, with a mix of sun and cloud. Temperatures expected to increase into next week. There is a chance for scattered showers in southern Ontario Saturday into Sunday.
  • Quebec: Lingering showers could be seen in eastern Quebec. High pressure will keep temperatures at seasonal levels.

Western Canada

  • Prairies: Severe thunderstorms hit southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba Thursday overnight. Nickel-sized hail was reported in Saskatchewan, while parts of Manitoba saw gusts up to 60 km/h. There is a chance for thunderstorms once again Friday for southern Manitoba. As a result, severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are in place for parts. Smoke continues to degrade air quality in Alberta, with advisories in place for southern portions of the province, as well as in Saskatchewan. Gusty weekend ahead for Alberta with up to 75 km/h winds, which could help disperse some of the smoke.
  • British Columbia: Significant rainfall on tap this weekend for almost all of the province as The Weather Network meteorologists track a series of low pressure systems that is expected to head along the B.C. coast. The lower mainland could see anywhere between 50 to 100 mm of rain between Friday and Sunday. A special weather statement remains in effect in anticipation of heavy rain over the South Coast this weekend. Widespread air quality advisories are still in effect due to smoke buildup.
