China heatwave: Misting systems helping residents keep cool

Friday, July 26, 2013, 6:36 PM -

Outdoor mist cooling systems have been installed to keep people waiting for buses cool as a heat wave settles into the city of Ningbo, in eastern China.

Four misting systems, which start spraying once temperatures exceed 37 degrees Celsius, have been installed at bus stops in the city's technical hub.

"A small amount of water can create huge amounts of mist, bringing down temperatures between four to five degrees Celsius," said Shen Weiliang, an official with the city's urban management bureau.

The temperature in Ningbo hit 39 degrees Celsius on Friday and the scorching weather is expected to continue until Sunday, according to the Zhejiang Provincial Weather Center.

The heat wave has forced wholesalers in Ningbo to take whatever measures they can to keep their vegetables fresh in outdoor markets.

In some places, perishable items are being preserved in air-conditioned rooms or covered with quilts.
