Caught on camera: Hikers swept off waterfall by flash flood

Friday, September 4, 2015, 3:29 PM - A group of hikers on vacation in Maui, Hawaii were swept away by an intense flash flood last week, and the entire ordeal was caught on camera by a drone.

In the video, the water overtakes the hikers in a matter of minutes, pushing them into the river below.

The group had been hiking on a popular trail near Maui's renowned Road to Hana. They were unaware the area posed a flooding risk.

Rennee Lusano, one of the hikers and the owner of the drone, writes on her blog the water appeared "without warning."

"It had to have been instantly 50 times as much water rushing over," she says.

Lusano says the area had seen isolated showers over the past few days, but conditions were clear when they set out for their hike.

Luckily, everyone survived the terrifying experience, and they had no idea they were being filmed.

"I wasn’t aware of whether [the drone] was recording or what it was recording," Lusano writes. "I was only concerned that it was hovering high enough to be out of danger while I climbed to higher ground."

Once the group was out of the water, they called 911 and were airlifted to safety.

Lusano hopes the video will help spread awareness about about the dangers of flash flooding.

"My five friends and I learned firsthand that flash flooding in Maui streams is a very serious danger," Lusano writes.

"I hope that our story and video spreads awareness and prevents similar rescues from having to take place in the future."
