A 38-year old Canadian woman is still missing after heavy rains and floods inundated Uruguay one week ago.

Nearly 4000 people have been forced to flee their homes, local authorities said Saturday.

"Two people of Canadian citizenship tried to cross a ravine near Route 5, in the department of Canelones (southern Uruguay), and were washed away," said the missing woman's companion in an interview with AFP

The 63 year old man managed to get out of danger but said his partner of 38 years was swept away by the current and is still missing.

Local authorities were notified about the incident Friday night, in which they began their search and rescue efforts.

On Friday, the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology issued a statement warning residents that an additional 100-200 mm (up to 300 mm locally) of rainfall was expected over the next few days and to take necessary precaution as conditions continue to deteriorate.
