Sunday, February 15, 2015, 5:19 PM - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved the sale of a genetically modified Canadian apple that never turns brown.

The USDA gave the green light to the so-called Arctic apple, created by Okanagan Speciality Fruits in Summerland, B.C.

The firm plans to market two varieties -- the Arctic Granny and Arctic Golden, new versions of the Granny Smith and Golden Delicious.

Okanagan Speciality Fruits of Summerland president Neal Carter estimates the fruit will be in American stores by late 2016.

He says the apples are the safest and most tested ones in the world.

He adds that stores, restaurants, airlines, and other companies that offer pre-sliced apples will find the alternative apples a good fit.
