EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated since its original publish date, as the family has decided on a family to receive the donated house.
A Calgary country crooner won’t be singing the blues after he and his wife came up with a plan that will see them build the house of their dreams, while saving their current 1950’s bungalow from being destroyed.
Believe it or not, but Jason Hastie and wife Gina are giving away their Killarney, Alta., home -- one which has been extensively renovated in the 10 years Jason has owned it. The couple are planning to offer the house to a family in need – likely one who lost their home in the June 2013 floods.
The story began with an online advertisement that received more than 350,000 views while the Hasties fielded more than 2,000 emails in response to it. They narrowed down those emails to 100 worthy candidates and then again down to 20 names. Now comes the hard part: meeting those 20 families and deciding who should get their house.

The Hastie's kindness has spurred others into action. A cleaning company has offered to clean the house once its new occupants are in it, while the Hastie's plumber will be doing the plumbing work, free of charge.
Finally, two moving companies have offered to help move the house – which carries a price tag of anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000.
Jason’s band, better known as Jason Hastie and the Alibi, plan to hold a fundraiser to help raise money for any additional costs incurred by having to move the house to its new location.
