Thursday, March 5, 2015, 12:03 PM - In parts of Ontario and Quebec the week is winding down on a frigid note. But a hint of spring sits on the horizon as mild air makes its way across Canada.

Where will it happen, and how long will it last?

Temperatures in parts of Ontario and Quebec experienced a seesaw effect this week. On Tuesday, southern Ontario saw a break in a cold streak of freezing temperatures that lasted 37 days, as highs crept slightly above 0°C and continued into Wednesday.

By Thursday, the frigid temperatures associated with this winter season returned. An extreme cold weather alert was issued by the City of Toronto as conditions felt close to -25 with the windchill.

But a mass of mild Pacific air has spread across the Prairies, and is set to replace the arctic air mass currently sitting over the east.

By Tuesday, the Great Lakes regions are expected to see temperatures pleasantly high above the freezing mark.

Fair conditions will continue to move eastward, affecting regions around Ottawa and Montreal, before moving into parts of Atlantic Canada by mid to late next week.

For those craving a reprieve from the cold, there's an added bonus to this weather pattern.

Conditions are expected to be calm, with little in the way of precipitation, and a forecast of clear, sunny skies.

"Southern Ontario is done with truly frigid temperatures, but we're not done with winter yet," said Weather Network meteorologist Doug Gillham.

Though the first day of spring is just days away, don't get too comfortable with the the idea of fair weather just yet.

"This is just a preview of spring," said Gillham. "Enjoy the mild temperatures while they last."

March is Spring Outlook month at The Weather Network and meteorologists forecast a slow start to the season as the harsh winter experienced across much of the country hangs on.
