Aurora borealis lights up Prairie skies

Monday, May 5, 2014, 6:31 PM - Prairie residents were treated to a spectacular light show over the weekend.

On Monday Reddit user Armand9x uploaded a stunning photo of green hues spotted in the skies over Winnipeg's Sturgeon Road on Saturday.

According to the user, the lights were even brighter in person, and Armand9x wasn't alone.

Social media erupted with aurora spottings across southern Manitoba on Saturday:

Auroras are caused when a solar flare collides with the earth's magnetic field, causing the atmosphere to emit a stunning, multi-coloured glow.
