Friday, April 29, 2016, 8:43 AM - This weekend marks the start of May, typically a month that brings warmer temperatures and even early signs of summer. In Atlantic Canada however, another couple of weather systems could keep things feeling more like winter a little while longer.

"A system set to bring rain to parts of Ontario on Sunday will continue to track into the Martitimes as a rather potent system early next week," says Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham. "Strong winds, rain and even some snow is likely for the first week of May."

An unsettled pattern will continue for most of next week in Atlantic Canada with below seasonal temperatures expected to dominate as well.

"There's the potential for another significant system for the Maritimes next Thursday as a low off the U.S. East Coast could phase with energy associated with a system from the Great Lakes," Gillham says.

APRIL: Snowiest month of the winter in St. John's

Drivers in St. John's, Newfoundland faced another difficult travel day on Wednesday after close to 15 cm of snow fell through the early morning hours. That's after the city saw close to 50 cm of snow from a powerful storm last week.

On average, the city of St. John's sees around 25 cm of snow for the entire month of April, but so far this month, closer to 80 cm has piled up.

Winter storm warnings in Labrador

Winter storm warnings remain in place in Labrador with up to 30 cm of snow possible through Saturday.

"Heavy snow and strong northerly winds gusting up to 80 km/h are expected to produce reduced visibilities in blowing snow until early Saturday morning," says Environment Canada in the warning. "Total snowfall accumulations of 20 cm are expected over most areas today with a further 10 cm tonight."

Drivers are being urged to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

"Gusty westerly winds across Newfoundland will bring occasional sea-effect flurries and wind chills feeling closer to the freezing mark Friday afternoon," adds Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern.
