Thursday, March 19, 2015, 6:32 AM - The latest storm to slam into Atlantic Canada is slowly beginning to leave the region, leaving behind a mess of cancellations and snarled travel.

The snow and the winds are easing in the Maritimes, with the low pressure system now moving through Newfoundland.

"Eastern parts of the Maritimes, including PEI and Cape Breton, will continue to see sea-enhanced snow today, as gusty northwesterly winds impact the area," Weather Network meteorologist Kelly Sonnenburg said early Thursday morning.

That will be on top of the already hefty amounts of snow, and very strong wind gusts, that plagued the region from Tuesday night into Thursday morning.

Newfoundland, meanwhile, is still in the thick of it, Sonnenburg says.

"By evening, snow will ease for he eastern portion, but western areas will continue to see snow due to sea-enhancement," she said.

Friday will be a quieter day, but it won't last. There is yet another system approaching the region.

"But this time, milder air will bring mixing and rain, and snowfall totals look to be much less than what we have seen with the previous systems due to warmer temperatures," Sonnenburg says.

Roads

  • Halifax Transit will still be shut down Thursday morning. Strait Area Transit cancelled for the day.
  • The Confederation Bridge was closed Thursday morning due to the conditions.
  • Blowing snow could create blizzard-like conditions and reduce visibility on the roads, leading to travel delays. Check current road conditions on theweathernetwork.com. and Confederation Bridge weather advisories for current conditions before you head out.
