A series of massive stone circles in the Middle East have stumped scientists for years -- but new high-resolution photographs may provide researchers with important new clues.
Referred to as the "11 Big Circles", the low stone walls were first discovered in the 1920s by airplanes.

Aside from that, isn't much known about the structures, and scientists have no idea what purpose they served.
The new, high-res photos suggest the Big Circles (which are about 400 metres in diametre) were created at least 2,000 years ago.
The images were captured by the Aerial Photographic Archive for Archaeology for the Middle East (APAAME), an archive that contains over 70,000 images and maps.
