Wednesday, May 25, 2016, 1:56 PM - Dozens of cars were enveloped by concrete after a 200-meter-long sinkhole opened along the banks of the River Arno in Florence, Italy.

Reports by laRepubblica.it indicate that the sinkhole was caused by a water main burst.

Thousands of residents between Ponte Vecchio and Ponte alle Grazie were left without water for hours. Two buildings were evacuated.

The collapse sunk four or five metres toward the river, and the damage is estimated to be 5 million euros, laRepubblica reports.

There were no injuries reported, thus several internet memes have begun to surface making light of the event.

"The more time passes, the more it seems obvious that this is a human error," Dario Nardella, Mayor of Florence, told laRepubblica.

An investigation has been filed to further explore the cause of the damage.
