Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

KingstownKingstown is located on the southwest coast of St. Vincent, the largest and northernmost island out of several that make up St. Vincent and The Grenadines. Kingstown is the capital city, and is bordered by the Caribbean Sea.

In Kingstown, tourists can find produce vendors, fish markets, rum shops, souvenir shops, restaurants and several elaborate churches, which the capital has become known for.

While it's a city of hustle and bustle, Kingstown is also a nice place to relax and stroll the cobblestone streets. For tourists looking for relaxation on the beach, there are many tan and black-sand beaches to choose from.

The weather almost always co-operates on St. Vincent, allowing for several truly tropical days at the beach. Annual daytime highs range from around 26 to 31 degrees Celsius. It's also quite dry from January to May. April is the driest month, seeing measurable rain only about 6 days.

July, meantime, can bring brief but heavy rainshowers about 26 days out of the month. Tourists should also be aware that Kingstown can be affected by tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

For adventure seekers, St. Vincent boasts first-rate diving and snorkeling, with crystal-clear waters and coral reefs. Hiking is also fabulous, especially north of Kingstown in the Vermont Nature Trails.

Accompanied by an experienced guide and when you have a full day available, be sure to make the trek into the northern half of St. Vincent, where the 4,000-foot, active La Soufriére Volcano is situated.

The volcano dominates the northern third of St. Vincent and almost year-round is shrouded by clouds formed when cool, southwesterly trade winds blow moisture in off the Atlantic Ocean. Little of this moisture ever spreads beyond the mountain, keeping the southern two-thirds of St. Vincent quite dry.
