Port of Spain is located on the northwest coast of Trinidad -- one of two islands that make up the country Trinidad and Tobago -- and is bordered by the Gulf of Paria. It is the capital city of Trinidad and Tobago and the commerical and cultural centre of the country.
Because of its thriving economy, metropolitan verve and late night entertainment, Port of Spain is also thought by many to be the hub of the southern Caribbean.
Trinidad is also where the world-renowned "Carnival" is held annually. Carnival is not simply a parade, but rather a street festival of sights, sounds, smells and tastes, featuring elaborate costumes and calypso and steel pan music that reflects the country's multi-ethnic culture.
If you're looking for heat, head to Port of Spain between June and October, which is the city's hottest period. Expect some rain in May, June and July, but it will be just enough to cool yourself down.
Tourists should be aware that while Trinidad and Tobago are usually outside the path of tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes, it's not out of the question for the islands, including Port of Spain, to be hit by the storms during the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30).
