Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis

BasseterreBasseterre is located on the southern coast of St. Kitts, the larger of two islands that make up the country St. Kitts and Nevis. Basseterre is the capital city of the country, and is bordered by the Caribbean Sea.

Shoppers are sure to find plenty of charming gifts and souvenirs in Basseterre, including tropical clothing, local art and St. Kitts' own liquor, CSR, made from local cane juice. Basseterre is also home to some local pubs and karaoke bars for those looking for some nightlife ideas.

During a walk, drive, hike or round of golf you may also come across an extraordinary group of individuals -- green monkeys! The descendants of the vervet monkeys brought to the country by French settlers 300 years ago, can only be found on St. Kitts and Barbados. But don't be alarmed. The animals are interested in nothing more than staring and squawking at tourists.

Travelling from Basseterre towards the Southeast Peninsula, beach-lovers will find Frigate Bay the ideal place for swimming and soaking up the sun. Once on the Southeast Peninsula, Turtle Beach, Sand Bank Bay and Friar's Bay South are phenomenal, boasting beautiful white sand. Here you will also find a stunning view of Nevis.

The north end of St. Kitts is where you will find black-sand beaches -- the result of the black igneous rock, which makes up the island, wearing down.

Basseterre sees about 1,410 millimetres of rain annually, and humidity is relatively low. Average annual high temperatures are in the 26-degree (Celsius) range, as constant northeast trade winds keep St. Kitts comfortable.

Tourists should be aware that Basseterre can be affected by tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
