Manzanillo is located on the southeast coast of Cuba, and is bordered by the Caribbean Sea.
The city is home to most of Cuba's commercial fishing boats, but is also known for its Sierra Maestra Mountains, which provide a breathtaking backdrop for Manzanillo's most popular tourist area, Marea del Portillo.
Because of these mountains, beaches in Marea del Portillo are an exotic, volcanic-black.
About a 40 minute boat ride from Manzanillo, sun seekers can discover the beautiful island of Cayo Blanco. On this small, secluded island, the sand is warm and white and the water clear and turquoise.
The weather almost always co-operates in Manzanillo, allowing for several truly tropical days at the beach. Average daytime highs from May to September range from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius. From October to April, highs of 24 to 29 are enjoyed.
Expect to see some rainshowers from May to October, which is Cuba's wet, summer season. The dry, winter season runs from November to April. Manzanillo is also quite humid year-round.
Tourists should also be aware that Manzanillo can be affected by tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
