  1. I can't find my city anymore what can I do?

With information for over 5,000 cities in Canada, the US and internationally and more being added all the time, making cities easy-to-find is always a challenge.

Below are listed the most common ways to find any city you may be looking for:

    • Homepage Map / Canadian Provinces / Cities Links
      — On the Homepage, each of the orange dots on the map of Canada corresponds to a city and is a link to that city.
      — Beside the map of Canada is a list of Canadian cities that includes all provincial capitals as well as several other popular cities from across the country. Below the map is a list of the Canadian provinces and territories. These links connect to an index of the cities within each provinces or territory.
    • Search Box
      — The easiest and more efficient method for finding any location on our website is the Search Box. Simply type in the location name and go!
      — Once you have visited a location, it will display in the My Locations list of your 8 recently visited locations.
      — The Search Box is accessible on every page and is located to the right of the top menu.

    • Canadian / US / International Cities Lists
      — If you want to browse a list of cities, try to the Canadian, US or International Cities list. Links to these lists are located above the Search Box on every page.
      — Within the Canadian and US Cities Lists, the cities are listed by province and state.

Keep in mind, if you visit the same city all the time consider bookmarking it. Bookmarking a page means your browser remembers the link so when ever you want to go to that page you simply choose it from your bookmarks or favourites list.

To bookmark a page on our website, simply go to the page you want to bookmark and click the "Bookmark this page" link located in the Sharing Toolbox at the bottom of every page.

  5. Where did the vertical navigation bar go and why?

Vertical navigation bars are a common navigation style that theweathernetwork.com has used for many years. As our website grew the list of links in the vertical navigation bar continued to grow until it became quite long. Feedback we got from our users suggested that the list was becoming too long and it was often difficult to find the links people wanted.

We decided to move to a horizontal navigation bar with dropdown menus in order to make links easier to find and to open up more space on the page.

As before, our website is divided into 6 sections: Weather, Travel, Roads, Home & Garden, Activities and Health & Environment. These sections make up the new horizontal navigation bar with dropdown menus listing the pages within each section.

All the links from the vertical navigation bar have been incorporated into the new navigation.

  7. I liked your site before. Why did you change it?

We are always trying to make our website better for you! On a regular basis, we ask users what they think is working and not working on our website.

Feedback we got from our users suggested that the vertical menu was becoming too long and it was difficult to find the links people wanted.

Moving the menu to the top of the page opened up space on the page so we took the opportunity to freshen up our layout making it cleaner and easier-to-read.

  9. I am having difficulty finding the page I was looking for using the new navigation, what do I do now?

If you can’t find a page on the new horizontal navigation there are 2 options:

    • Search Box - if you are looking for a page associated with a specific location (i.e., a city, park or golf course) enter the name or part of the name into the search box. You will get all of the cities, attractions, golf courses, parks, schools and airports with at name.
    • Site Map – the site map lists the main pages within our website. The pages are organized by major section so when you find the page you are looking for you will see what section it belongs to for the next time you come to the website.

  11. I used the Search Box and got an error message, why and what do I do now?

There are 2 possible messages that you could receive from the Search Box:

    • "No locations have matched your search criteria."
If you received the above message, you have entered a word or group of words that do not match one of our locations. The Search Box looks for places such as cities, attractions, parks and golf courses. Try entering just one word and see if you receive more results. We have over 3,000 Canadian cities and many more parks, schools and ski hills. You may be searching for a place that we do not yet have. If so, please let us know and we will look into adding it.
    • 404: Page Not Found
The "404 Page" is the traditional web error page. If you received this page an error has occurred in the search process. You can try your search again or try using the horizontal menu to find what you are looking for. If the problem persists, please let us know so we can fix the problem.

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

  31. Why is the New Look fixed width instead of fluid or elastic width?

Fluid or elastic web pages resize to fit the screen resolution of each computer. This flexibility creates problems for web designers when they come to layout content on the page as different screen sizes will change the way the page looks.

In order to provide a more consistent presentation across multiple browsers we decided to move to a fixed width layout. The site is now fixed width to accommodate the 1024x768 resolution which represents the majority of our daily visitors.
