Diversity

We see all kinds of weather here in Canada, from the crisp chill of winter, to the pounding rain and wind of a tropical hurricane. Canada’s population is just as diverse, and in that variety, we gain strength and experience.

At Pelmorex, we are passionate about employment equity and diversity. Our goal has been to represent the community that we serve and to have an inclusive work environment. We have embraced employment equity as an integral component of our corporate philosophy and culture, ensuring that our employees are treated fairly, responsibly and equitably. Equity is at the forefront of our people management processes, decisions and hiring practices. We are strongly committed to employment equity in the workplace.

In order to achieve and maintain fair employment practices for all employees we have a Diversity Committee, which meets quarterly. The committee allows us to work together to achieve our goals of enhancing diversity in the workplace from all levels and departments within Pelmorex. Members of the Diversity Committee participate and contribute to our on-going equity initiatives.

Some of our diversity measures include:

  • Established relationships with student associations representing people with disabilities and Aboriginal peoples at local colleges and universities.
  • Distribute job postings to 40+ associations.
  • Established a collaborative working relationship with the Canadian National Institute of the Blind, where we have given 'employment preparedness' seminars to students, arranged for job shadowing, and conducted Information Sessions for groups of CNIB clients about the Company’s diversity initiatives and recruitment opportunities. The CNIB has provided several training sessions on descriptive narrative to our on-air television presenters, helping them improve our programming for the benefit of visually impaired viewers.
  • Provided Diversity Awareness Training Sessions to our management team and invited representatives from associations of Aboriginal Peoples and persons with disabilities to provide awareness sessions to our management team.
  • Coordinate several internships annually.
  • Established annual scholarships for students.
  • Two special leave days per year are provided for family matters/emergencies and two days per year for non-statutory religious holiday leave.
  • Designated space at our facility for multi-faith/prayer rooms.

As a result of our commitment, Pelmorex has been awarded several achievements for our work in the area of diversity. Pelmorex was featured in the 2005 Employment Equity Annual Report from Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) as "An Employment Equity Success Story" ...as an employer who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to the principles and goals of employment equity." In addition, Pelmorex was the recipient of 2003 Vision Award for excellence in Employment Equity by the Ministry of Labour. This is the highest award for employment equity and recognizes those organizations for the special efforts and outstanding achievements in moving towards a representative workforce.
