Couple finds 80,000 bees living in bathroom walls

That's a lot of bees.

A Florida couple recently renovated their bathroom and found a metre-high beehive with 80,000 bees living in the walls, alongside 45 kg of honey.

The couple, Stefanie and Dan Graham of St. Petersburg, said they had lived with the bees for many years, often seeing them in the home.

"We both really love nature, and we love bees," Stefanie told The New York Times.

"We're like, 'We'll leave you alone. You leave us alone.' They were nice bees. So we were like, 'Sure, go ahead, live in our shower.' "

They told the Times they had removed a beehive from their bathroom and continued to see insects in their home in the years following.

But while they knew the bees were there the couple says they were shocked to learn just how many bees had taken up residence in their bathroom.

When they had decided to re-do the space, they called in Elisha Bixler, a professional beekeeper, who carefully removed the insects in a five-hour process.

They were carefully placed in a box and brought to Bixler's farm, where they will later be relocated to different local apiaries, far away from showers and sinks.
