Blizzard Warning

Issued at 4:51 a.m. AST Tuesday 27 January 2015
Summary

Blizzard conditions with occasionally near-zero visibility in snow and blowing snow today. A low pressure system off the U.S. coast will intensify as it approaches the Maritimes today. Heavy snow over the southwestern Maritimes will spread northeastward to the rest of the Maritimes by this afternoon. Very strong northeasterly winds gusting to 100 km/h or possibly higher will give blizzard conditions with near-zero visibility today. General snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm are expected with locally higher amounts possible. Over parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island snow will mix with or change to ice pellets and freezing rain later this afternoon then rain in the evening. Elsewhere the snow will taper off overnight or Wednesday.

Details

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. If you become stranded in a vehicle do not leave. The vehicle offers a form of protection from the cold. A single person walking through the snow is harder to find than a stranded car or truck. Ensure that shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals. Blizzard Warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 4 hours. Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Stay up to date with Weatheradio or your local media. Email reports of severe weather to weatherASPC@ec.gc.ca or call 1-877-815-9900. You may tweet reports using the hashtag #PEStorm.
