An intense low pressure system over Nova Scotia will move to lie over the Gulf of St. Lawrence today before moving through the Strait of Belle Isle overnight tonight. For the Great Northern Peninsula: snow will continue into the afternoon before changing to ice pellets or freezing rain. Generally a total of 15 centimetres of snowfall is anticipated followed by potentially significant amounts of freezing precipitation. The precipitation will taper off or end by Friday morning. For regions under a freezing rain warning: freezing rain is expected to persist into the afternoon before changing to rain as temperatures rise. Freezing rain may persist a little longer in low-lying valley locations. For regions under a rainfall warning: rain at times heavy will persist today before tapering off tonight. Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 50 millimetres can be expected across these regions, with amounts up to 70 millimetres possible from Burgeo to the Connaigre Peninsula. Warm temperatures combined with these rainfall amounts will lead to significant snow melt, creating a potential for localized flooding. Additionally, brisk southwesterly winds in the wake of the low will cause temperatures to quickly fall below freezing. This could potentially lead to flash freeze conditions overnight tonight into Friday morning for regions receiving rain and mild temperatures today. Furthermore, strong south to southeasterly winds ahead of this system will persist this afternoon. Wind gusts in the Wreckhouse area will continue near 130 km/h this afternoon but are expected to diminish to near 100 km/h by this evening. Furthermore coastal gusts are forecast to reach 100 km/h along parts of the East Coast from Bonavista North to St. John's this afternoon into this evening.
