Snowfall Warning

Summary

A long period of snowfall, with total amounts of 20 to 30 cm is expected. The Pacific weather system which brought large amounts of snow to central Alberta will begin to weaken and move further east today. Conditions have improved in the grande prairie region this morning and this trend will continue throughout the day. regions in the edmonton area will begin to improve this afternoon while areas further east will see snow taper off this evening. Storm totals in some areas will exceed 30 cm of snow. storm total summaries will be issued later today. Brisk northerly winds will continue to generate drifting or blowing snow in open areas and along major highways today. Conditions will improve overnight as the wind diminishes. Behind the system, frigid Arctic air will drop daytime highs well below normal for the weekend. Snowfall warnings are issued when 10 cm of snow or more is expected to fall in 12 hours or less.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.
