In the fall of 1988, English and French language weather services, The Weather Network and MétéoMédia, launched in Canada. One year later, Pelmorex was founded by Pierre Morrissette, Chairman, President, CEO and controlling shareholder. Pelmorex acquired The Weather Network and MétéoMédia in 1993. In 1995, the growing company launched its highly successful websites, theweathernetwork.com and meteomedia.com. The following year, The Weather Channel based in Atlanta, Georgia, was brought on board as a strategic minority shareholder. In 1997, The Weather Network moved to the Greater Toronto Area from Montreal to be in its largest market. The number of employees has more than doubled since the acquisition of the networks, jumping from 125 to over 300. When the services launched, many Canadians didn’t believe there was a market for a 24-hour weather service. Today The Weather Network and MétéoMédia are the leaders in the Canadian weather-related information services business and among Canada’s most popular media services.
